Properties of selected zirconia containing silicate glasses II.

 R. Karell, J. Kraxner, M. Chromčíková, M. Liška

Viscosity, density, thermal expansion, glass transition temperature, refractive index, molar refraction, and chemical durability of 15M2O·10ZnO·xZrO2·(75-x)SiO2 (M = Na, K; x = 1, 3, 5, and 7) glasses were measured. The strong influence of ZrO2/ SiO2 equimolar substitution on measured physical and chemical properties was detected in accord with the assumption of the glass network strengthening by ZrO2. The effect of ZnO / CaO substitution was quantified by comparison with the results obtained for 15M2O·10CaO·xZrO2·(75-x)SiO2 (M = Na, K; x = 1, 3, 5, and 7) glasses. It was demonstrated that the ZnO/CaO substitution strengthens the silicate network.
