The effect of heat treatment on the course of crystallization in bulk and in the surface layers during the formation of β-quartz s.s. and β-spodumene s.s. glass ceramics was studied. The results suggest that the different kinetics of phase transformation in volume and in the surface layers is responsible for the formation of stress at the sample surface during the formation of glass ceramics.
