Decomposition of calcium chromite was studied in the temperature range of 1473 to 1973 K in an atmosphere of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide mixed in various proportions. Phase analysis was employed in the evaluation of the temperatures and the corresponding oxygen partial pressures pO₂ at which the first particles of chromium metal arise. The results obtained were used for calculating the standard Gibbs energy ΔG⁰ of the reaction within the above temperature interval. The temperature dependence can be expressed by the following equation: ΔG⁰ = -165.2 x 10-3T + 790.0 [kJmol-1].
