The effect of nucleation on the transformation of anatase to rutile was studied in a borosilicate glass melt at 900 °C. The samples were nucleated for 1 hour on the temperature range of 450 to 750 °C. The number of rutile crystals in the sample does not depend on the number of anatase crystals, but in the nucleation temperature only. In the glass melt in question anatase is not transformed to rutile by a modification transformation, but an indirect transformation by the mechanism anatase → melt → rutile.
