An apparatus has been designed for measuring the thermal diffusivity of two-layer materials, in the present case plasma-sprayed alumina coatings on a steel base. The unstationary flash unit comprises a xenon flash lamp used to irradiate the specimen. A thermocouple welded to the rear side of the steel base provides the signal which is amplified, and passed through an AD converter to the SAPI 1 computer for processing. The arrangement has the advantage of allowing both layers to be measured at the same time and the thermocouple to be attached to the metal base. After verifying the function of the apparatus on pure metals, i.e. Cu, Ni and Fe Arema, measurements were made on specimens with alumina coatings of various thicknesses on a steel base. The results indicate that thin coatings up to 0.4 mm in thickness have a higher thermal diffusivity than the thicker ones. Coatings up to 1.38 mm in thickness were measured. Operation of the apparatus is fully automatic.
