THE GROWTH OF CALCITE GRAINS IN MIXTURES WITH CERTAIN ADDITI0NS

The growth of grains in the mixtures of CaCO₃ with various types of additions (Na₂CO₃, SrCO₃, kaolin, MnCO₃ and BaCO₃) and with varying amounts of these (2 and 5 percent by wt.) was investigated by measuring the grain size on microscopic pictures of thin sections prepared from isothermally heated pressed samples. The phase composition of the samples after their heating was determined by X-ray analysis. When compared with the grain growth of pure CaCO₃ the rate of this process is higher in mixtures of CaCO₃ with Na₂CO₃ and SrCO₃ additions and lower in those containing additions of MnCO₃ and BaCO₃; the growth of the calcite phase is substantially retarded when a relatively small amount of kaolin is added to CaCO₃.
