The presence of OH groups in the melt is the main cause of the formation of gas bubbles in cast basalt. The amount of OH groups bound in basalt melt was determined together with the temperature dependence of the equilibrium concentration OH groups which is controlled by the relation COH₂O = 0.41 exp(-1.27/R.T). The effects of temperature, cooling rate and constant temperature delay on the number of bubbles formed were also established. The results were verified by means of operational cooling curves.
