This study developed fine-grained concrete mixtures using a milled glass mix from solar panels and washing machines to partially replace the sand or cement. The analysis of the fine-grained concrete exothermic hydration reactions, density, ultrasound pulse velocity, flexural and compressive strength, water absorption, porosity and resistance to alkali environment is presented herein. The findings demonstrated that substituting up to 10% of the sand with dispersed glass waste from solar panels and washing machines improved the mechanical properties of the concrete, particularly after curing the sample for one year. On the contrary, replacing up to 10% of the cement reduced the density and ultrasonic pulse velocity, but still ensured sufficient resistance to the alkali-silica reaction. Furthermore, the incorporation of 5% metakaolin waste facilitated the regulation of the hydration process and improved resistance to the effects of alkali environments. The developed fine-grained concrete mixtures demonstrated favourable physical and mechanical performance, offering the potential to reduce the cement and sand content and increase the use of recycled materials without compromising the durability or quality. |
