Using the integral balances method, the rate of dissolution of a solid body in the meniscus of a liquid is expressed by derived equation - N = 0.44R1/4, where R is the Rayleigh number and N is the Nusselt number. This relation is verified experimentally by dissolving a NaNO₂ specimen in NaNO₂-CH₃OH-H₂O solutions containing various proportions of the components. The relationship established complies with equation N = 0,53R1/4 and is therefore in good agreement with theory, Although based on a model system only, the submitted study might find numerous applications in the corrosion of refractories by melts.
