The course of sintering of CaCO₃ mixtures with various types (SrCO₃, Na₂CO₃, BaCO₃, kaolin and MnCO₃) and amounts (2 and 5 percent by wt.) of admixtures was investigated by continuous measurement of contraction of pressings heated at constant or linearly rising temperature. The phase composition of the samples after their heating was determined by X-ray analysis. SrCO₃ and Na₂CO₃ have a favourable effect on the sintering of the pressings; additions of BaCO₃ and MnCO₃ somewhat reduce the rate of sintering, and the sintering process is substantially retarded by adding a relatively small amount of kaolin to CaCO₃. A discussion is presented of the effect of phase composition on the sintering of samples following their isothermal heating.
