THE STUDY OF DICALCIUM SILICATE PHASE FORMED BY THERMAL DECOMPOSITION OF MERWINITE

The formation of a solid solution of dicalcium silicate phase, arisen by the thermal decomposition of merwinite in air atmosphere, has been proved, by means of the electron microprobe method as well as by the microscopic and X-ray investigation of cooled samples. It has been made evident that a solid solution containing both Mg2+ and Cr3+ ions has been formed. Since the formation of solid solution of α C₂S with Mg2+ ions has not been stated yet, it has been deduced that it has not been the usual α-form of C₂S, but probably α’C₂S which has been effective in this case.
