The authors describe an apparatus and method for measuring the time course of temperature during hydration of inoganic binders. The method is based on scanning the temperature inside a hydrating binding agent, thus characterizing the generation of hydration heat in the course of setting and hardening of the binder. The intensity, rate and course of the process is described by the time dependence of temperature plotted in integral or differential form. The temperature inside the hydrating binder is scanned by a silicon planar diode. The study was concerned with proving the suitability of the connection employed (Fig. 5), that of the diode chosen as the measuring probe from the standpoint of simple evaluation, measuring technique, long-term durability as well as electrical characteristics shown in Figs. I and 2, mechanical and corrosion properties of the probes plotted in Figs. 3 and 4, and listed in Table I. The experimental part of the study dealt with practical measurements of the course of hydration temperature made on pastes of ground Stramberk clinker. A survey of the pastes is given in Table II. The measurements were carried out under isothermal and semiadiabatic conditions. The measuring results, i.e. the curves of the time course of temperature during hydration T = f(t) and those of the hydration kinetics dT/dt = g(t) for the individual specimes are plotted in Figs. 6 through 13. The advantages of the method are assessed in the conclusion. It is said to be applicable in laboratory as well as in the field. The apparatus is easy to construct, consisting of readily available parts and components. Measurements can also be carried out on inaccessible parts of building structures. The method can be employed in determing the temperature gradients in structures exposed to thermal shocks, provides information on the effect of admixtures and agents on the course of hydration, allows the quality of cement to be checked with respect to storage ageing, and the course of steam curing in the manufacture of prefabricated concrete elements to be optimized with respect to energy consumption.
